The digitalization of public administration is an objective necessity of the contemporary era. This has become
a strategic objective at the level of the European Union, and implicitly, of the member states. In this context, Romania
is carrying out an extensive process of implementation and modernization of the IT infrastructure at the level of public
institutions. The customs administration is an active subject of this approach, developing multiple operational
applications. We present in our study the “Automated Export System” (AES-RO). We aim to capture its content and
functionalities, the ease of its operation by economic agents and to outline the effects generated on customs activity.
