The EU-Mercosur trade agreement is an important step in the development of international economic relations.

For countries such as Romania, members of the EU but highly dependent on intra-EU trade, the agreement may generate new opportunities for businesses and markets, but it will also generate risks in certain sectors where Mercosur countries have cost advantages resulting from various more favourable local conditions.

The analysis of the economic impact of the EU-Mercosur agreement on the Romanian economy shows an insignificant influence on the gross domestic product, including the indirect impact of the value-added chains in which the Romanian industry is active.

A risk assessment in the agri-food sector shows certain vulnerabilities for several types of goods, in particular poultry and maize, which could expose Romanian producers to unfair competition from Latin American countries.

For these products, the agreement does not provide sufficient clauses to ensure protection for local producers.
