Abstract
This paper presents the mechanics and planning use cases of option strategies while considering several implementation variations that include strike selection and moneyness, term and time decay, dividend windows, and client suitability and governance for financial planners. The paper then examines the lifecycle tax outcomes that arise at the principal transaction endpoints of option overlays, including expiration, early termination, and assignment. The paper then presents numerical illustrations. Understanding the tax lifecycle of covered calls and cash-secured puts allows financial planners to evaluate derivative strategies not only by their pre-tax payoff profiles but also through the lens of after-tax portfolio outcomes, an essential perspective for fiduciary investment management in taxable accounts.
